From Punky to Pretty.

Well Marc Jacobs, you brought back the crass girl with punky 80's trends, but I'm predicting with the popularity and trickle-down effect of the trend a new girl is on the rise. The New York Times talks about the sexiness and cool of the model who is just too hot to handle and is clearly not the soft, feminine creature that women are known to be.

Well here's a challenge for you. Try something pretty (gasp). Why you ask? Well feminine doesn't necessarily mean powder pink, grandma florals and  and long hem-lines. Oh no sugar! Feminine whites, laces and bows (as seen in Chanel's show above) may be a little excessive for the not-so girly girl. But how about cool pastels with  interesting, gauzy and feminine silhouettes like Alternative Apparel's cowl neck shirt?

Be on the lookout for prints this season in fun shapes, like the flirty printed-mini dress from Karen Walker's runway show. With spring around the corner, get ready to get pretty again! I can sleep peacefully again knowing that I don't always have to dress like a biker chick...ahh :D

MGMT x Vogue = Pure Happiness

Wait, one second. HOLD THE PHONES. MY favorite band of all time, MGMT (pronounced Management for all you ill-informed) is in Vogue. This would be a perfect time to use the chocolate and pretzel analogy again (see For the Record. post).

MGMT, a band whose songs were featured in our student-run rendition of The Importance of Being Earnest ( I played Ms. Prism, what what!), is a fabulous duo of two Wesleyan students. They fell in musical love at the university and the rest is electronica/indie/alternative history. One of the best moments of my life had to be when I met them in the food court of the festival Lollapalooza when I got lost sans money/cellphone/purse during Rage Against the Machine (you will only understand how grave the situation was if I let you know that someone DIED during that concert). I ended up finding my friends and being offered a fry by Andrew (pictured on the left below). What. A. Night.

I digress. However the clothes that were featured in the photographs with MGMT are traditionally credible lines that have invigorating, young designers that have breathed new life into these old-school fashion houses. Absolutely wonderful if you ask me, a fresh-faced ingenue draped in clothes that are just as invigorating as the music produced by the artists standing next to her.

Oh and here's a picture from the time I was actually happy I got lost. Ben is on the far left, Andrew on the far left and myself and all my friends in between!

Won't you Take my Picture Mrs. Photographer?

Watermill Center Benefit Gala 2007 (Teacup Pug), 2007

Some things just aren't glamorous and that's a fact. Practically no one can take a picture of a tea-cup adorned pug next to a Mondrian-style wedge heel and make it look more fabulous unless it's Jessica Craig-Martin. Known for snapping the pics of the upper-echelons in their not-so-glamourous moments, she brings those of the high society a little bit closer to the masses with one part glitz and one part normal and creates a photograph that is alluring, yet odd at the same time. Take a look for yourself at an online exhibition entitled American Summer.

Cancer Benefit, Southampton 2006 (Air Kiss), 2007

Oh, and I forgot to mention her artwork is displayed in Gossip Girl in none other than Lily Bass' Upper-East Side apartment. Yeah, she's that damn cool.

Gaga-Oo-La-La

So guys.
A friend of mine called yesterday and asked if I wanted to go to the Gaga concert. Of course I said yes, and of course it was amazing. She had so many costume changes it was INSANE and of course they all were INSANE. If asked to pick a favorite outfit, I think that would be so difficult.

I can explain her wardrobe with a few one-word descriptors: shiny, minimal, one-piece, feathers, jaw-dropping. She wore a very egyptian-style, barely there metal suit that for some reason reminded me of Whitney Houston in the movie The Bodyguard.

One of my all-time favorites had to be her ending outfit not only because she wore an amazing pair of of high-waisted ivory...wait for it...PANTS with an elaborate, heavily shoulder-padded, disco-ball esque top with cone boobs. AAAAMAAAZZINNNGG.

This Ain't McDonalds, but I am Lovin it.

This is definitely my next purchase. These (hot) sunglasses are designed by two twins from the Midwest. Worn by the likes of Rihanna, Nikki Minaj, Vanessa Simmons, these glasses definitely embrace and revamp the return of the 80's. To check out their merchandise head to their site or their blog. Best of all, the price point is amazing for a unique pair of sunglasses.

For The Record.

If you were wondering, the header is taken from one of the back-up singers for the artist Santigold (formerly known as Santogold). I, unfortunately, had to miss her performance at Lollapalooza and my lovely friend Meghan took photos from the concert.  Despite (apparently) being fabulous back-up dancers, the pair of back-up dancers wore these fabulous uniforms of gold lame jackets and old-school ray-bans. Pretty dang on shweet if you ask me, music and fashion are kind of like chocolate and pretzels. Both are fabulous separately, but twice as good when together.

New Year's Resolutions.

Despite my beliefs against making a New Year's Resolution, I've decided mine will be to start and maintain a blog. I want to blog about what I love which is fashion and everything that comes along with that. Music. Politics. Media. Photography. Whatever.

As Anna Wintour once said, "Fashion does not exist in a vacuum." So it only makes sense to talk about not only the trends, but what in the real world influences the fashion world. So let's have a re-see, where we take a closer look at the trends and maybe find something out we didn't know.
